Toasting and Roasting Frank Schuck

The birthday boy and his wife.

On June 27, Toastmasters veteran Frank Schuck celebrated his 75th birthday with a Toastmasters dinner at The Wine Bar in Atlantic Highlands. He invited friends from clubs at AT&T Middletown Toastmasters, Red Bank Toastmasters, and Talk of Monmouth, an advanced club.

Paul Ireifej served as the Toastmaster. He kicked off the meeting with a roast. He acknowledged Frank’s military service and did an impression of Frank, complete with his gravelly voice and wide arm gestures. Paul ended with sincere words, applauding Frank’s 48-year marriage to his wife, Sheila, noting that you don’t even know if it’s been a good 48 years.

Next, Rohit Sivadas came to the lectern with a roast. He noted that Frank’s wife, Sheila, is really the important person that evening! Rohit complimented the beautifully designed cake (complete with Toastmasters logo), acknowledged Frank’s new Area Director role and ended by referring to Frank as the funny guy who brings cakes.

Radhi Spear continued the evening with a roast. She started by saying, “now I can tell Frank to his face things I’ve been saying behind his back.”

From Club Member to District Officer (Part 1)

Let me start by borrowing Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford University Commencement line where he says, “you cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward”. With that said, if you had asked me three and a half ago, at the beginning of my Toastmasters journey, if I thought I was going to be serving as a District Officer, my answer surely would have been NO.

When I first join the Toastmasters, I had no idea of the organization’s scope and dimension. As a matter of fact, I was more focus on getting a promotion at my job than I was interested in becoming a good communicator and a leader. I couldn’t imagine what the road ahead had in store for me.

An Interview with Stacey Greene: Winner of District 83’s International Speech and Evaluation Contests

After the Spring 2017 convention, Su Brooks sat down with the Winner of  District 83’s International Speech and Evaluation contests, Stacey Greene, to ask her a few questions.

Where do you work and what is your occupation?

I work at Prudential Financial as a Project Manager in the Global Business Technology Systems Organization.

What made you decide to become a Toastmaster?

I loved the opportunity to work on projecting my naturally soft-spoken voice as well as the instantaneous feedback that Toastmasters provides. The feedback has allowed me to develop a fondness for healthy and constructive feedback and to know the difference between that and destructive feedback.

Welcome to the District 83 Blog

Dear D83 Toastmasters,

This is your blog. The goal is to create a place to share our Toastmasters ideas and experiences. We will be happy to publish your submissions as long as they meet the guidelines explained below.

D83 Blog Guidelines

  • All posts must be Toastmasters related.
    • Articles should be on club events, public speaking, leadership, your Toastmasters experience, or ideas on how to grow your club.
    • Other articles may be considered.
  • Submissions must be professional. No cursing or inappropriate subjects. If you wouldn’t say it in a meeting, don’t write a Toastmasters’ blog post about it.
  • Editors will approve all submissions before publishing. They have the right to refuse to publish an article and will provide feedback.
  • Keep articles to a maximum of 500 words. Longer articles will only be considered if they are compelling and well-organized.
  • If the editors feel a submission is a better fit for the newsletter, they will pass it on to the newsletter editors, Janette Alexander and Jen Fredericks. If the newsletter editors decide not to publish the article, then the blog will post it.
  • Don’t be afraid to try something new. You don’t have to be a journalist to submit. We will be happy to work with you through the writing process.
