Su Brooks Discuss What Makes Talk of Monmouth Unique

Su and Rebecca at the District 83 Spring 2017 Conference.

Bill Atkins asked Su Brooks a few questions about why she loves Talk of Monmouth.

Why did you join Talk of Monmouth?

Rebecca Marzec-Young and I were encouraged by Anne Gilson to serve as Sponsors. We had been talking about how great it would be to have an advanced club in Monmouth County.

What is your most memorable thing about being a member of Talk of Monmouth?
Hosting a Speakout during our mobile meeting on the Magic Bus returning from the International Convention in Washington, DC in 2016.

What does our club offer that’s different than most clubs?

Members have access to passionate, experienced leaders since our club has a large proportion of current and past District Leaders; strong commitment to DCP goals, fun special events in addition to the meetings in the courtroom.

What was your biggest surprise at Talk of Monmouth?

I facilitated Club Officer Training a few times and was extremely surprised that so many qualified people immediately volunteered to serve as trainers for the breakout sessions for each officer role or to help with whatever was needed. I thought it would be more difficult to get people to participate. Then, at one session, we had Toastmasters from Districts 83, 38 and 46 attend.

How has Talk of Monmouth benefited your personal journey?
Provides opportunities for longer speeches in the Advanced Communication manuals. Becoming inspired by others who have tackled some of the manuals I haven’t tried yet.

What was the funniest thing that happened at Talk of Monmouth?

At charter time, Toastmasters International pinned our location in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. We all laughed about it and decided to have an aquatics theme meeting.

Another time was when we hosted the joint Area 61 and 62 contests the same night as signups for Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading in our town. I thought the parking lot was crowded because many people were coming to attend the contests.

What does Talk of Monmouth do that helps you grow?

The members provide thoughtful, comprehensive evaluations and opportunities for the club to consider additional evaluation styles and techniques to motivate advanced speakers to improve.

What are you most proud of at our club?

President’s Distinguished status in its first two years. I am looking forward to continued success with the club.

Why should someone join Talk of Monmouth?

Fun, friendship, great stories, wonderful people, great leaders, willingness of members to serve on HPL committees for each other, and plenty of free parking. Our VPE and Area 61 Director Frank Schuck is developing a strong mentoring program to support the needs of those on their journey to DTM as well as those who have already achieved one or more DTM designations.
