Meet the District Officers: Lynda Starr

Name: Lynda Starr, DTM

Position: Club Growth Director

Club(s): Dining to Speak

Other positions: I have held all club roles, except for treasurer. Currently Vice President for Membership for Dining to Speak. I am a former District 83 Public Relations Officer, newsletter co-editor, Division Governor, and Area Governor.

How long have you been in Toastmasters? 10 years

What are your plans for the district/area/division?

As club growth director, my goal is for District 83 to be President’s Distinguished. I believe in aiming for the stars and you may hit the moon. I plan to work closely with the other district officers and all members to grow District 83 and to retain existing members and clubs in order to share the benefits Toastmasters membership offers.

Why did you join Toastmasters?

I was working as a telecom industry analyst, doing many in-person and online presentations. In a performance review, it was suggested to me that Toastmasters would help me to build my skills, especially in Q&A. I quickly earned a CC, and while I did not remain with that company, I was hooked on Toastmasters and remain so.

What advice do you have for new members?

Joining Toastmasters will not automatically make you a better speaker. You need to work the program, read the manuals, practice and be committed to your own success. The program is self-paced and you are not in competition with anyone to achieve goals. Moreover, to say Toastmasters is a public speaking organization is to sell it short; it will help with communication in many situations, leadership and interpersonal skills.
